Dancing for Joy | Extraordinary Teacher

Kiyon Gaines teaches students in both the Men’s Professional Division and the Open Adult Classes at Pacific Northwest Ballet

When Kiyon Gaines walks into the studio and lights up the room with his mega-watt presence, saying Good morning, Everybody, dancers feel his energy drawing them in. Soon dancers of all levels and abilities, from seasoned and aspiring professionals to weekend hobbyists, are following his moves, taking his direction, and doing everything they can to be the best they can be.  Kiyon Gaines’ choreography is powerful and athletically challenging; sometimes quixotic, dreamy and complicated, always the essence of pure joy. His exuberance is contagious and the pulsating energy in the studio drives dancers to experience something greater within themselves that would not have been possible unless they had walked into the studio and taken his class. Kiyon Gaines is often described by those who have seen him in action—dancing teaching or working as a choreographer—as exuberant, but his exuberance is much more than magnetic energy or a personality trait. Kiyon has found it exhilarating to teach students as well as adults and believes Everyone who wants to learn to dance, should learn.  He is the catalyst that inspires dancers to come into their own unique expression of joy.  Where does his magic come from?
