The Limits of Presidential Power

Category:

In my operational risk seminar this spring, students ranked and then restacked and ranked the top operational risks present in our world.  No one was especially pleased with the results, and the top three risks – cyber-threats, global uncertainty, and terrorism – seemed nearly interchangeable, depending upon the month. As we came to the end of the quarter – particularly with the terrorism acts in Manchester, London, and Tehran -- “global uncertainty” seemed to encapsulate the other two risks, particularly when the elections in France and Great Britain are taken into account along with the performance of the U.S. president on his first diplomatic trip abroad.

We the People Proclamation

Most Americans are compassionate and caring people who want to build better lives for themselves, their children, and their communities. We are enriched by working together to achieve goals that benefit the common good. Regardless of our political affiliation—blue vs. red, conservatives vs. liberals, or republicans vs. democrats, we believe in our core democratic principles. We believe we have more in common that is good and true. The issues that divide us are less important. It’s like Benjamin Franklin said, “We can choose to hang together, or we will all hang separately.”

Gaslighting Tactics Used by Fascist leaders

The fascists use of gaslighting has made the American people go to war against each other, instead of seeing who the real enemy is and what the real enemy is doing to America. Let’s analyze and compare the gaslighting tactics used by three fascist leaders: Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Take Back America

I wrote the book American Spin to give Americans a peek behind the curtain to understand how the news gets made. Published in the Spring, 2015, American Spin is defined as the slant or the angle of a news story. The facts that are emphasized and the facts that are omitted or minimized is what creates Spin. What I wrote about American Spin in 2015 is child’s play compared to what we are seeing post-Presidential election 2016. Today’s news cycle is dominated by Gaslighting. Gaslighting is boldfaced lying that is fabricated to brainwash the masses. It is important for us to understand that Trump and the GOP is diabolically brilliant at Gaslighting. They have hijacked America. The question is: Can we take back America? #Take Back America

The Right to Vote is Hard Earned

When the U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1789, it was meant to be a means by which the states  ascribed powers to the federal government, but its first ten amendments -- the Bill of Rights -- defined limits on the federal government to enumerate constitutional protection for individual liberties.  The principle of representation was an intensely argued one when the Constitution was drafted, most particularly in how slaves would be counted (as three-fifths of a person) in a federal census every ten years.  In her book, These Truths, Jill Lepore notes “The most remarkable consequence of this remarkable arrangement was to grant slave states far greater representation in Congress than free states.” (125)
